For most of the history of product development, prioritising a backlog looked something like this. Backlog management meant ruthless filtering. A product manager would sit down with a scrum team, a finite capacity, and a list of candidates — items drawn from the strategic roadmap, from the backlog, from whatever had been accumulating since the last sprint. Each item needed to be written up based on research. Sized based on impact. Assessed for technical feasibility. Weighed against everything else competing for the same capacity.
Then a decision would be made.
Sometimes this took a week. Sometimes it took several weeks. The time wasn't wasted — the thinking was real and the decisions mattered. But a significant portion of it was coordination overhead: getting the right people in the room, aligning on what the data meant, resolving disagreements about priority that could have been resolved by better data.
AI didn't change what good prioritisation looks like. It changed how fast you can get there.
The steps that still need to happen
Here's what hasn't changed: the actual work of prioritisation.
You still need to understand what customers are experiencing. You still need to assess impact — which problems matter most, and to whom. You still need to evaluate feasibility — what can realistically be built with available capacity. You still need to generate specs clear enough for engineering to act on. And you still need to make a call about what to do next.
Those steps exist for good reasons. Skip them and you end up building the wrong things with great efficiency.

Your judgment. The scores don't make the decision. You do. The system surfaces what the data says. You decide what matters most given where the business is, what you're trying to achieve, and what your gut tells you about the signal. That part doesn't get automated — and shouldn't.
